A lot of vaguely tough talk from Met ownership ... on a day in which they did nothing to arrest the freefall of their $137 million team, destined to be routinely booed in a beautiful new ballpark.
Two long balls from Jose Reyes that will look nice on the highlights -- and another horrible error that opened the door for an opponent. Jose's electricity/stupidity ratio was even for the day. Congratulations, Jose!
Given an excuse, Mike Pelfrey once again lowered himself to the occasion, demonstrating that he needs some more time in New Orleans. Faced with the possibility of New Orleans, Aaron Heilman didn't screw up. That's progress these days.
The Mets fought back from a 2-0 deficit, briefly took the lead, fell behind and, as is their wont, went to sleep. These days they're dead ringers for one of those minor-conference champions that get their tickets stamped to March Madness. They hang around for a bit, then fall behind by three or so in the first quarter. Then five, then eight, then double digits and you know it's over.
Did that cover it? Of course it did -- we're talking about the 2008 New York Mets. Goodnight, sweet underachieving princes....

Had to turn off Willie's post-game presser. He has the look of a haunted man. Personally, he seems to be a class act. Bad spot to be in.

I had the displeasure of catching tonight's installment of unispired baseball first hand. A bunch of people started a "Fi-re Wil-lie, clap clap clap-clap-clap" chant. Did it come across on tv?

You could hear the chant in the 8th or 9th inning on TV. I dont think anyone commented on it on SNY. I wish the would have done it every inning.

How on Earth does Willie still have a job? The real depressing thing about this team is that this is likely as good as it will get for awhile. With little in the farm system and decent free agents overpriced and harder to come by, it's hard to see this team getting any better any time soon
How is a team with this much money so completely unable to develop any homegrown talent besides Wright and occasionally Reyes? Even the prospects they trade don't seem to be that good. That being said, Willie must go. Now. Re: How Is This Night EXACTLY THE SAME AS EVERY OTHER NIGHT?

The Mets went 1-2-3 in their final five innings. Their batting average against bullpens must be truly exceptional. I was there (0-3 at Shea so far this year) and I've don't know if I've ever felt the crowd so punchless. We knew by the end of the 4th that things were basically finished. We just stuck around to occasionally voice our displeasure. This Mets lethargy, it's contagious.

I'm going to see this bunch in two weeks against the Padres in San Diego. Luckily I live in LA so it's not a cross-country flight, but talk about a match-up that looked a lot more interesting when tix went on sale. At least Petco Park is supposed to be nice.
Hopefully, the only place I'll see Willie is in the stands having a hot dog. It wouldn't be a bad idea for Delgado, Castillo, Heilman and a bunch of others to join him there too. Re: How Is This Night EXACTLY THE SAME AS EVERY OTHER NIGHT?

Can someone tell me why our CLEAN UP HITTER thinks he should be BUNTING last night in the first inning??? . . . more stupid baseball from both Beltran and, of course, Reyes . . . and yet some Mets fans in my office believe that Reyes had a good night last night and they can't understand that I'd gladly exchange his 2 solo homers for making the routine play to end the first inning, and I'm sure Reyes thinks he hada good night too . . . this franchise is f*cked, with both Reyes and Beltran as so-called building blocks

What If....
...the Mets somehow win the next two games against the Florida Marlins and pull to within 4 1/2 games out. Could that possibly be the beginning of turning this team around for this season? With Santana on the mound tonight, I like our chances; plus Florida is due to lose a couple of games. I really hope the Mets can win these next two, just to at least see if/how the fans' attitudes might slightly change towards this team and this season.... I'm perilously close to saying I'll start paying real close attention in 2009. I haven't done that since the de Roulet years. But that's how disappointing this team is.
